COW CREEK UMPQUA INDIAN FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES RECIPIENT OF THE BUSS RONDEAU AWARD

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: Martha Young, 957-8945

The Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation distributed $536,595 to 56 organizations serving youth and families in their spring cycle of philanthropic giving. The grant awards were given at a special awards ceremony hosted by the Foundation on July 7 in Canyonville.

The awards ceremony culminated with a special presentation by Mrs. Wallace “Buss” Rondeau. The annual Buss Rondeau Award, given this year for fostering community spirit in support of the students in the Sutherlin School District, was presented to the Sutherlin Booster Club.

The Booster Club also received grant funding from the Foundation for its project of replacing the aging wood bleachers at the Sutherlin middle/high school with steel bleachers that are wheelchair accessible. Schools from around the area, along with a variety of community groups, use the bleachers for a number of events. The project was fully supported by the community at large and accomplished by volunteers.

The Buss Rondeau Award was established by the Foundation Board of Directors to honor Buster Rondeau, a long-standing tribal board member and founding member of the Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation Board of Directors.

“Buster, a long-time resident of Sutherlin, strongly supported the local schools and he felt community involvement to better the schools was very important” said Sue Shaffer, Tribal and Foundation Board Chair.

“The selection of the Sutherlin Booster Club to receive the award would have made Buster very happy,” agreed Mrs. Polly Rondeau.

She will be presenting the award in his memory. Buster passed away in the spring of 2000.
