COW CREEK UMPQUA INDIAN FOUNDATION AND THE COW CREEK BAND OF THE UMPQUA TRIBE OF INDIANS ANNOUNCE JULY 2004 GRANT RECIPIENTS
The Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation and the Cow Creek Band of the Umpqua Tribe of Indians distributed $417,415 in their spring cycle of philanthropic giving. Forty-two charitable organizations were on hand to meet the members of the Foundation Board of Directors and receive their grants from the Foundation at a ceremony held at the Seven Feathers Hotel and Resort Conference Center in Canyonville on July 2.
This marked the thirteenth round of grants awarded by the Foundation, which was established in October of 1997 by the Cow Creek Band of the Umpqua Tribe of Indians. Since the Foundation's inception 425 grants totaling $4,670,534 have been given. The mission of the Foundation is to offer assistance in youth education, strengthening youth and family, provide positive youth development and add to the quality of life for people residing in Douglas, Jackson, Josephine, Klamath, Deschutes, Lane and Coos Counties.
The recipients of this round of Foundation funding include:
DOUGLAS AND COOS COUNTY:
- South Umpqua High School Booster Club $5,000 for building handicapped accessible restrooms and concession stand for stadium area;
- Project Literacy of Douglas County $10,000 for literacy community outreach program;
- Days Creek School District $4,500 to purchase equipment for FFA program;
- Sutherlin High School $5,000 to purchase supplies for FFA program;
- Phoenix School $9,000 for vocational education program;
- Roseburg Soccer Association $10,000 for renovation of soccer field to benefit 2000 area youth;
- Elkton Community Education Center $15,000 for greenhouse equipment for vocational program;
- Applegate House Heritage Arts $6,200 to support summer camp scholarships for north Douglas County youth;
- Boys and Girls Clubs of Umpqua Valley $8,500 to support summer camp program;
- Family Development Center $20,000 for child abuse prevention outreach service to south Douglas County;
- CASA of Douglas County $20,000 for volunteer recruitment and training for child abuse prevention program;
- Douglas County ESD $7,000 for parenting classes for the Douglas County Early Childhood Programs Coalition;
- Cobb Street Children's Learning Center $20,000 to assist with child care costs for low income families;
- Southwestern Oregon Community Action Center Great Afternoons $10,000 to assist with child care costs for low income families;
- Canyonville Chamber of Commerce $20,000 for development of community park;
- St. Francis Xavier Community Kitchen $1 0,000 for food and equipment purchase for meals program for low income community members;
- Umpqua Homes for the Handicapped $9,200 for roofing materials;
- Umpqua Community Action Network Confidence Clinic $10,000 for Life Skills Program tor low income women;
- Umpqua Community Action Network $10,000 to assist with construction of new food bank warehouse;
- Winston Area Community Partnership $10,000 for kitchen equipment for new community center;
- Umpqua Community Development Corporation $10,000 to assist with construction of housing for domestic violence victims;
- Umpqua Community Health Center $5,000 for health care services for low income families.
JOSEPHINE, JACKSON, KLAMATH, DESCHUTES, LANE COUNTIES:
- Southern Oregon University $10,000 to fund scholarships to the Native American Youth Academy;
- Southern Oregon Humane Society $3,600 to fund violence prevention program for at-risk teens;
- Southern Oregon Drug Awareness $5,625 to purchase alcohol abuse prevention equipment;
- WinterSpring $8,000 to provide grief support for families;
- Boys and Girls Clubs of the Rogue Valley $10,000 for Grants Pass Club expansion;
- Coalition for Kids $8,000 for child care costs for low income families;
- Rogue Gallery and Art Center $7,000 to support summer youth enrichment program;
- SunnyWolf Community Response Team $5,000 to assist with purchase of van for medical appointments transportation;
- Three Rivers Community Hospital $5,000 for computer for Retired Senior Volunteer Program Prescription Assistance Program;
- Integral Youth Services $10,000 for building materials for summer youth program;
- Marshall High School $7,500 to purchase physical education program equipment for alternative school for at-risk youth;
- Mt. Star Relief Nursery $20,000 for child abuse prevention program;
- Women's Resource Center $10,000 for life skills training program for low income women;
- Junction City School District $5,150 for summer program for area youth;
- Eugene Hearing and Speech Center $4,000 for early literacy summer institute;
- Pearl Buck Center $10,000 for transportation for special needs preschool;
- Friends of the Children $15,000 for youth mentoring program;
- CASA of Lane County $16,640 for volunteer recruitment and support for child abuse prevention program;
- NetCorps $5,000 for technology assistance for nonprofit organization in southern Oregon;
- Better Oregon Fund $2,500 for the Chalkboard Project for education
