The Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation and the Cow Creek Band of the Umpqua Tribe of Indians distributed $398,922 in their autumn 2002 cycle of philanthropic giving. Thirty seven charitable organizations were on hand to meet the members of the Foundation Board of Directors and receive their grants from the Foundation at a ceremony held at the Seven Feathers Hotel and Resort Conference Center on January 22.

The Awards Ceremony culminated with a special presentation by Mrs. Wallace "Buster" Rondeau. The fourth Buss Rondeau Award was presented to the Telequa Community Center for enhancing the love of reading in the Tiller community through increasing the library inventory.

The Buss Rondeau Award was established by the Foundation Board of Directors in 2000 to honor the memory of Buster Rondeau, a long standing tribal board member and founding member of the Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation.

"Support for literacy and youth education was very dear to Buster's heart," said Sue Shaffer, Tribal Chairman. "Buster felt that strengthening the family and providing opportunity for education were the keys to personal success."

Mr. Rondeau was raised in the Tiller area.
