Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation And The Cow Creek Band Of The Umpqua Tribe Of Indians Announce January 2002 Grant Recipients
The Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation and the Cow Creek Band of the Umpqua Tribe of Indians distributed $400,991 in their autumn cycle of philanthropic giving. Thirty four charitable organizations were on hand to meet the members of the Foundation Board of Directors and receive their grants from the Foundation at a ceremony held at the Seven Feathers Hotel and Resort Conference Center in Canyonville on June 14.
This marked the eighth round of grants awarded by the Foundation, which was established in October of 1997 by the Cow Creek Band of the Umpqua Tribe of Indians. Since the Foundation's inception 218 grants totaling $2,325,232 have been given. The mission of the Foundation is to offer assistance in youth education, strengthening youth and family, provide positive youth development and add to the quality of life for people residing in Douglas, Jackson, Josephine, Klamath, Deschutes, Lane and Coos counties.
The recipients of this round of Foundation funding include:
DOUGLAS AND COOS COUNTY:
- Family Development Center $19,125 for child abuse prevention outreach to south Douglas County families,
- Safari Game Search Foundation $20,000 for a science and math curriculum project,
- Highland Elementary School $4,300 for sports equipment for a Reedsport after school table tennis program,
- Junior Achievement of Douglas County $6,000 to expand curriculum to additional elementary schools,
- Roseburg Public School District, $3,000 to support the Southern Oregon Principals' Association spring conference,
- Southwestern Oregon Community College CARE Connections $6,500 to support the annual child care providers training conference,
- Douglas County School District 14 $9,125 for purchase of musical instruments and development of an art program,
- Umpqua Valley Arts Association $8,000 to support a youth theater project,
- Sunset Middle School $5,000 to upgrade arts equipment,
- Winston Area Community Partnership $4,025 to purchase playground equipment for RiverBend Park,
- Umpqua Community Action Network $15,000 to purchase playground equipment for a low income housing complex,
- Umpqua Community Health Center $20,000 to support low income health care clinic services,
- Oakland Cooperative Playschool $9,444 to purchase playground equipment for the new facility,
- North Douglas Park and Recreation District $20,000 to provide matching funds for pool bathhouse renovation,
- Douglas County Library Foundation $20,000 to provide matching funds to upgrade the children's book and tape collection,
- Yoncalla Branch of the Douglas County Library System $20,000 to purchase furniture for the historical and education classroom,
- Fish of Roseburg $15,000 to assist with food boxes, shelter nights and prescription assistance.
JACKSON AND JOSEPHINE COUNTIES:
- Kids Unlimited of Southern Oregon $16,000 to support the after school homework program,
- Medford School District 549C $16,000 to support a school retention program for atrisk boys,
- Boys and Girls Clubs of the Rogue Valley $20,000 to support the White City Boys and Girls Club,
- Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Southern Oregon $2,968 to provide money management instruction to low income families,
- Centro Hispano of Southern Oregon $7,000 to provide translation support services for Hispanic families,
- Grants Pass Habitat for Humanity $10,000 to assist with building costs for a subdivision of homes for special needs families
LANE AND DESCHUTES COUNTY:
- Looking Glass Youth Services of Lane County $10,000 for the youth violence intervention project,
- Encore Theater $5,000 for a mentor program through theater for atrisk youth,
- Sacred Heart Foundation $19,250 for the Courageous Kids youth grief support program,
- Wilani Campfire Council $6,274 to purchase camp tipis,
- Oregon Trail Council $8,000 to purchase camp tents, Parent Partnership $16,000 to provide outreach and translation services to Hispanic families,
- SOAR $10,000 for scholarships for youth recreation activity fees.
