Announce Grant Recipients
The Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation and the Cow Creek Band of the Umpqua Tribe of Indians distributed $373,120 in their spring cycle of philanthropic giving. Thirty six charitable organizations were on hand to meet the members of the Foundation Board of Directors and receive their grants from the Foundation at a ceremony held at the Seven Feathers Hotel and Resort Conference Center in Canyonville on June 14.
This marked the seventh round of grants awarded by the Foundation, which was established in October of 1977 by the Cow Creek Band of the Umpqua Tribe of Indians. Since the Foundation's inception 184 grants totaling $1,924,241 have been given. The mission of the Foundation is to offer assistance in youth education, strengthening the home and family, youth programs and to add to the quality of life for people residing in Douglas, Jackson, Josephine, Klamath, Deschutes, Lane and Coos counties.
The awards ceremony culminated with a special presentation by Mrs. Wallace "Buster" Rondeau. The second biannual Buss Rondeau Award was presented to the University of Oregon for the Many Nations Longhouse project. The Longhouse will provide a center for the cultural, educational and social enhancement of Native American students, faculty and visiting community members. The Buss Rondeau Award was established by the Foundation Board of Directors to honor Buster Rondeau, a long standing tribal board member and founding board member of the Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation Board of Directors.
The majority of the funding to date have been to those programs benefiting youth and families and providing youth education. The recipients of this round of Foundation funding include:
Douglas and Coos County:
- Sutherlin School District $ 10,000 for the development of community athletic fields,
- Fullerton IV Elementary School PTO $3,000 for playground equipment,
- South Umpqua High School $18,507 for updating computer equipment,
- Tri City Elementary $ 10,000 for playground equipment,
- Oregon Children's Foundation $13,000 for the SMART program in Tiller, Canyonville, and Days Creek schools,
- Oakland High School $4,000 for a student landscape project,
- Lincoln Middle School $5,730 for a student/community fitness course,
- Oakland Elementary School $8,000 to enclose an outdoor playground structure,
- Days Creek High school FFA $3,500 to upgrade FFA equipment,
- Battered Persons Advocacy $10,500 for a transitional housing project,
- Southwestern Oregon Community Action Agency $5,000 for child care services for Reedsport families,
- Cobb Street Learning Center $15,000 for child care tuition for drug treatment program graduates,
- Douglas Education Service District $5,000 for parenting training tuition,
- Southwestern Oregon Community College CARE Connection $5,000 child care provider training,
- Riverside Center $18,075 for playground equipment,
- Douglas County Family Fun Center $9,960 for Teen Center,
- Umpqua Community Action Network $15,000 for support of WarmLine information and referral service.
Lane County:
- University of Oregon $20,000 for the Many Nations Longhouse project,
- Center for Community Counseling $ 10,000 for parenting education and counseling services,
- Lane County Legal Aid Inc. $11,000 for supervised parent visit project,
- Rose Children's Theater $5,000 for children's theater project in partnership with Westmoreland Elementary School,
- Community Alliance of Lane County $6,000 to support community building and multicultural celebrations,
- Food for Lane County $10,593 to purchase food preparation equipment for youth summer feeding program,
- Neighborhood Economic Development Corporation $12,000 for home ownership education project for low income families.
Deschutes and Klamath Counties:
- J Bar J Learning Center Youth Services $20,000 for substance abuse prevention program for area middle schools,
- Chandler Center for Community Leadership $15,000 for nonprofit management and youth services training project, J
- Bar J Big Brother Big Sister Program $5,000 for mentoring program,
- Crater Lake Council Boy Scouts of America $8,000 for vans for summer camp transportation.
Jackson and Josephine Counties:
- Southern Oregon University Youth Programs $5,000 for Native American Youth Academy,
- Jefferson Elementary School $ 10,000 for technology project for English as a Second Language students,
- Rogue Valley Community Development Corporation $10,000 for low income housing renovation project,
- Pacifica $19,900 for horticulture project for Kindergarten through 8th grades with area schools,
- Illinois Valley Community Response Team $20,000 for computer upgrades for high school computer lab,
- Sunny Wolf Community Response Team $16,500 for teen center,
- St. Vincent De Paul $2,475 for employment assistance project,
- Rogue Music Theatre $7,380 for summer camp scholarships for low income students.
