Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation
And The Cow Creek Band Of The Umpqua Tribe Of Indians
Announce Grant Recipients
The Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation and the Cow Creek Band of the Umpqua Tribe of Indians distributed $378,355 in their autumn cycle of philanthropic giving. Thirty one charitable organizations were on hand to meet the members of the Foundation Board of Directors and receive their grants from the Foundation at a ceremony held at the Seven Feathers Hotel and Resort conference center on December 19.
This marks the sixth round of grants awarded by the Foundation, which was established in October of 1997 by the Cow Creek Band of the Umpqua Tribe of Indians. The mission of the Foundation is to strengthen youth and family and provide support for youth programs and youth education. The Foundation makes grant awards to nonprofit programs in seven counties in southern Oregon including Douglas, Josephine, Jackson, Klamath, Deschutes, Lane and Coos. The tribal foundation has made 148 grant awards totaling $1,551,121 since its inception three years ago.
The awards ceremony culminated with a special presentation by Mrs. Wallace "Buster" Rondeau. The first biannual Buss Rondeau Award for Innovation in Education was presented to the Riversdale Academy, a project of the Roseburg School District. The Riversdale Academy is an authentic one room school house located on the property of Melrose school. The academy provides opportunities for district students to have a handson experience of early American history. Students attend the academy for social science curriculum and experience first hand what attending school was like in the year 1867. They are taught by "Miss Barry" using McGuffey's Readers and quill pens.
The Buss Rondeau award was established by the Foundation Board of Directors to honor Buster Rondeau, a long standing tribal board member and founding member of the Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation Board of Directors. "Support for youth education was very dear to Buster's heart," said Martha Young, Foundation Administrator. "He felt that strengthening the family and providing opportunity for education were the keys to personal success." Buster passed away last spring. His wife, Polly, presented the award in his memory.
