Announce Grant Recipients
The Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation (formerly the Cow Creek Seven Feathers Foundation) and the Cow Creek Band of the Umpqua Tribe of Indians distributed $253,158 in their spring cycle of philanthropic giving. Twenty five charitable organizations were on hand to meet the members of the Foundation Board of Directors and receive their grants from the Foundation at a ceremony held at the Seven Feathers Hotel and Resort Conference Center in Canyonville on June 5.
This marked the fifth round of grants awarded by the Foundation, which was established in October of 1977 by the Cow Creek Band of the Umpqua Tribe of Indians. Since the Foundation's inception 117 grants totaling $1,172,766 have been given. The mission of the Foundation is to offer assistance in youth education, strengthening the home and family, youth programs and to add to the quality of life for people residing in Douglas, Jackson, Josephine, Klamath, Deschutes, Lane and Coos counties.
The majority of the funding to date have been to those programs benefiting youth and families and providing youth education. The recipients of this round of Foundation funding include:
Douglas and Coos County:
- CASA of Douglas County Inc. $20,000 for volunteer recruitment, training and support,
- Parent Relief Nursery $19,330 for outreach staff to serve the families on the waiting list,
- Days Creek High School FFA $3,500 for agricultural equipment purchase,
- Oregon Children's Foundation $14,350 to expand the SMART program to three south Douglas County schools,
- Melrose Elementary School $10,000 to fund the reading station,
- South Umpqua School District $7,000 for a mentor project,
- Lookingglass Elementary School $6,450 for a land laboratory project,
- Glide High School $3,791 for supplies for a health vocations program,
- Highland Elementary School $10,109 for the TASK program,
- Open Door Clinic, $20,000 for health care services,
- Foster Grandparent program $5,000 for support for volunteers in the schools,
- Umpqua Homes for the Handicapped $11,200 for home repair,
- Canyonville Elementary School $5,900 for equipment for shared school/community park,
- Umpqua Community Center $12,500 for center repair,
- Special Olympics $5,000 for equipment and uniforms,
- Southwestern Oregon Community College $3,050 child care conference scholarships.
Lane County:
- The Child Center $20,000 for special needs parent library project,
- Goodwill Industries Child Development Center $5,000 for kitchen equipment,
- Special Olympics $5,000 for athlete training.
Deschutes and Klamath Counties:
- J Bar J Learning Center $5,178 for reading program,
- Winning Over Anger and Violence $11,900 for school violence prevention program,
- Special Olympics $5,000 for athlete support.
Jackson and Josephine Counties:
- Southern Oregon University Youth Programs $5,000 for Native American Youth Academy,
- Jefferson Elementary School $10,000 for playground material,
- Community Health Center $15,000 for patient examination room for White City facility,
- Community Works $3,900 for infant child care center,
- Rogue Valley Community Development Corporation $5,000 for materials for low income housing renovation,
- Special Olympics $5,000 for athlete support.
