Almost Nine Million Dollars is Awarded in Ten Years of Giving
by the Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation

Canyonville, Oregon ........ In twenty-one rounds of giving, the Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation has awarded $8,797,146 to 815 grants. The Foundation focuses its giving on seven counties in Southern Oregon: Coos, Deschutes, Douglas, Jackson, Josephine, Klamath, and Lane.

According to Sue Shaffer, Chairman of the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians, “The Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation giving continues to mirror the priorities of our ancestors by sharing what we have, in order to build strong communities and healthy families.”

Exact amounts awarded to each county in the ten year period are: Coos, $445,752; Deschutes, $571,458; Douglas, $3,552,627; Jackson, $1,345,909; Josephine, $938, 751; Klamath, $165,360; and Lane, $1,200,233. In addition, $422,056 was given for multi-county programs in that ten year period. Unsolicited grants, grants not given through the regular application process, were awarded $155,000.

The Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation focuses on education and families in its giving. A breakdown by category and monies received by each category shows: arts, $254,982; child abuse prevention, $672,764; child care, $468,035; community support, $2,970,680; domestic violence prevention, $150,593; education, $2,367,348; and positive youth development, $1,757,744. Special grants received $155,000.

The mission of the Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation is to offer assistance in youth education, strengthening the home, family, and youth programs, and, in general, add to the quality of life for people in the community.

The Cow Creek Tribe negotiated the first Tribal/State compact in Oregon in April of 1997, providing for tribal charitable giving. As a result, a percentage of net gaming revenues from all Oregon tribal casinos are set aside to benefit local communities.
