Evelyn Badger-Nores Joins Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation Board
Roseburg, Oregon - Evelyn Badger-Nores is the new member of the Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation Board. Badger-Nores, a lifelong resident of Douglas County, has been, for the past two years, the Executive Director of Douglas Cares, a private non-profit organization that serves physically and sexually abused children.
When asked about her service on the Board of the Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation (CCUIF), Badger-Nores replied, “It’s overwhelming, really. Douglas County’s unemployment is at 10.4%. It’s so fortunate the CCUIF Board knows, really knows, this community. The CCUIF isn’t an abstract foundation located elsewhere. It takes care of people right here [Southern Oregon] right now.”
The Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation began its work in 1997. Board Chairman Sue Shaffer, Vice Chairman Norm Gershon, Arlene Herbert, Gloria McGinnis, Carol McKinney, and Tom Rondeau, Sr. are all CCUIF board members who began their Board terms that year. After their deaths, original Board members Buster (Buss) Rondeau and Don Lilja were replaced by Delbert Rainville and Carma Mornarich.
The Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation’s mission is to offer assistance in youth education, to strengthen youth and family, to provide positive youth development, and to add to the quality of life for people in Douglas, Coos, Deschutes, Jackson, Josephine, Klamath, and Lane Counties. Since its beginning eleven years ago, the Foundation has awarded $9,150,260 in grants to non-profit organizations. Awards are semi-annual, in January and June.
Carma Mornarich, the CCUIF Board’s current Executive Director, replaced founding CCUIF Board Executive Director Martha (Marty) Young after Young’s death in 2006. Mornarich’s position on the Board is now occupied by Badger-Nores.
Board Chair Sue Shaffer commented, “Evelyn is right. The CCUIF Board does know the community. For instance, Carma, Evelyn, and I were all raised in Days Creek. Everyone serving on the Board has a long relationship with all other members of the Board. It’s made us a very productive group.”
