Roseburg, Oregon......Maj Hutchinson, founding Executive Director of LEAD (Leadership, Education, Adventure, Direction), and all the folks at LEAD have been awarded the Martha Young Award for outstanding service to youth by the Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation Board.

LEAD, located in Lane County, became an independent, non-profit agency in 2001, offering a comprehensive leadership development program for more than one hundred low income, multicultural and/or at-risk teens each year. Lead provides alternatives to gang involvement, youth violence, abuse and neglect. They adopted a mission to develop the leadership skills of low-income teens and empower them to do no less than address community problems and change the world.

All LEAD participants are expected to attend high school and to graduate. Once a month, LEAD takes teens into the natural world to experience the beauty of wilderness and build a sense of team. Evenings include a family-style dinner, practice in public speaking, leadership activities, games, and homework help. The teens help to run and serve on the Board of Directors for their community center, Nuestro Lugar, and provide leadership to their communities.

According to Carma Mornarich, Executive Director of the Foundation,"Martha Young first sang the praises of this organization three years ago, noting its unusual trust in and reliance upon the teen participants, its unique ties to experiences in the natural world, and its emphasis on working to create positive world change. We are proud to award the Martha Young Award for outstanding service to youth to Maj Hutchinson and the people of LEAD."

Martha (Marty) Young, the founding Executive Director of the Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation, passed away in 2006 after ten years of leading the Foundation. Throughout her life, Young embraced the challenge of bettering the lives of children and families. Since her death, during each granting cycle, the Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation Board presents the Martha Young Award to an organization they believe supports her ideals.

Past recipients of the Martha Young Award are the Family Development Center Parent Relief Nursery located in Douglas county and the Deschutes Children’s Foundation in Deschutes County.
